Palkowitsch-Kühl, (Künstliche) Glaubensbilder in Social Media als Thema des Religionsunterrichts
(Artificial) representations of faith in social media as a topic for religious education
(Artificial) representations of faith in social media as a topic for religious education
This article examines the significance of social media for religious communication and its relevance for religious education. Social media increasingly functions as a space for proclamation, where Christian influencers (Christfluencers, Sinnfluencers) convey religious content in a realistic way and form digital communities. Initiatives can be identified in both major churches in Germany: the EKD established the yeet network, while Catholic creators organise themselves in the Cross Connected network, among others. Generative AI is giving rise to new forms of digital agency through AI avatars and virtual religious figures. Church documents reflect on these developments from a theological and ethical perspective. This raises key tasks for religious education: critically examining questions of authenticity, religious authority and manipulation in the digital space, reflecting on parasocial relationships, and promoting media literacy. The article argues that social media phenomena should be taken seriously as a reality of students' lives and used as spaces for reflection on faith communication and digital ethics.
