Rabbiner Ludwig Philippson (1811?€’1898) war ein einflussreicher jüdischer Publizist und Bibelübersetzer. Eines seiner bedeutendsten Werke war ein Bibelprojekt, das er in den Jahren zwischen 1839 und 1854 in drei Bänden mit 4000 Seiten publizierte. Es enthielt den hebräischen Text, eine deutsche Übersetzung und einen umfangreichen Kommentar mit 500 Illustrationen. Der vorliegende Beitrag stellt das Bibelprojekt im Zusammenhang mit Ludwig Philippsons Wirken vor, erläutert seine Übersetzungsgrundsätze und -praktiken und hebt Stärken und Schwächen des Übersetzungswerkes hervor. Am Beispiel von Israels Aufenthalt in ?„gypten wird das Verhältnis von Text und Bild bei Philippson erläutert.
Ludwig Philippson and his Bible Project
Rabbi Ludwig Philippson (1811–1898) was an influential Jewish publicist and Bible translator. One of his most important works was a Bible project that he published in three volumes of 4,000 pages between 1839 and 1854. It contained the Hebrew text, a German translation and an extensive commentary with 500 illustrations. This article presents the Bible project in the context of Ludwig Philippson's work, explains his translation principles and practices and highlights the strengths and weaknesses of the translation work. The relationship between text and image in Philippson's work is explained by taking Israel's sojourn in Egypt as an example.
