Islamic Religious Instruction in Austria
Islamic Religious Instruction in Austria
Legal Framework, Actors, Curricula, and Fields of Discourse and Tension
The article examines Islamic religious instruction (IRI) in Austria as a confessional subject taught in public schools in light of Austria's cooperative model of religion-state relations. Against the background of the legal recognition of Islam in Austria (1912) and the introduction of IRI in public schools since the early 1980s, it outlines the key legal and institutional foundations (the Religious Instruction Act, responsibilities and jurisdictional competences, the role of the Islamic Religious Community in Austria, and school-organisational conditions) and discusses challenges relating to curriculum development and staffing. It then considers curricula and educational aims (competency orientation, relevance to students' lived realities, and the ability to engage with plurality), as well as pathways for teacher professionalisation. A further focus lies on empirical findings and contested interpretations in which IRI is situated between recognition, ascriptions of integrative potential, and suspicions of segregation. Finally, the article synthesises the available evidence and research gaps and formulates perspectives for future development.
